Godzilla X Megaguirus: The G Extermination Strategy was the first of three Godzilla scores composed by Michiru Oshima. As other composers before her, Oshima composed her own theme for Godzilla, which first appears in "1996: Godzilla Attacks Osaka." She would continue to use this theme for Godzilla in the next two movies that she composed music for. Along with Godzilla, Oshima also composed themes for Megaguirus, the Dimension Tide weapon, and the Special G Task Force. I especially like the battle motif Oshima wrote for the final confrontation between Godzilla and Megaguirus. ("Godzilla X Megaguirus I, II, & IV" and "Program Restored / Conclusion") But how does this release measure up to the previous ones? The initial release had a 45 minute presentation of Oshima's music plus two Akira Ifkube tracks used in the movie and some sound effects. The second version released exclusively with a Japanese DVD set had an extended presentation of the movie's music but left out the Ifkube tracks as well as the sound effects. This release also features the additional 13 minutes of music included in the CD from the DVD set, but also has the Ifkube tracks and as well as some bonus material. The only thing that wasn't carried over from the original release was the sound effects. If you are interested in the bonus material, be warned that while it looks like a lot of music, the bonus music only amounts to about 5 minutes of the running time. It's easy to say this is the most comprehensive collection of music from Godzilla X Megaguirus. I really enjoyed being able to hear Oshima's score in its entirety. I am glad there is now a far easier way to listen to the complete score without tracking down that elusive exclusive CD from the Japanese DVD set.
