After several scores by Akira Ifukube, Toho turns to Takayuki Hattori this time for the music. This is a fairly full disc running at over 50 minutes. The main title on this CD is a mixture of different musical types and sounds and has a similarity to the theme from "The Poseidon Adventure" at times. Track #2 sounds as if it were heavily influenced by John Williams score to "Superman" and Track #3 sounds like it was influenced by John Barry's James Bond themes, in particular, the theme from "The Spy Who Loved Me". In fact, most of the tracks on this CD sound like they were very heavily influenced (ripped off?)by other popular movies. Most of this score also sounds like it belongs in a TV movie-of-the-week rather than in a big budget film. Don't get me wrong, the music here is very enjoyable and easy to listen to. It will remind you of many other movies including a few of the other 90's Godzilla themes. If Mr. Hattori was going to use influences and themes from other scores it would have been nice to have also reworked a few of Mr. Ifukube's great themes. Overall this is a decent, mostly action oriented, score that has a lot of music that sounds remarkably like the theme heard in "The Poseidon Adventure". Track #23, "Echoes of Love (Date of Birth)", is a love theme sounding piece with a female vocal. |
