REVIEW |
11/28/1999 - Review by David Hirsch Hattori isn't a bad composer, the melodies are quite good. However, he's hampered by the same remarkably poor orchestrations that haunted Godzilla Vs. SpaceGodzilla. He seems to favor heavily muted horns that belittle the larger orchestral sound achieved by the strings. That same reoccurring horn motif that was overused for SpaceGodzilla rears itself once again here. I also suspect there's some kind of dig at the American Godzilla here because Hattori mocks David Arnold's army theme and doesn't the other monster look like the American Godzilla after it's met a blow torch? It could have been much better, but it also could have been much worse. * Added by Larry Tuczynski I pretty much agree with all that Dave has said above. The problem he mentions with the horn orchestrations is very evident on how well they played track 31, Akira Ifukube's themes with the original orchestrations. Or is track 31 done by Akira Ifukube himself? He is given credit for track 31 on the CD but since I can't read Japanese can't tell if it says that track was done by him or by Hattori with Ifukube's orchestrations. Also I am waiting for final judgment on this music until I get an opportunity to see how well it works in the movie. I know I have enjoyed the music from the latest Gamera and Mothra films more after seeing how they worked in the films. |
