Until fairly recently this was the last film released in the U.S. Here we have Koichi Sugiyama taking a stab at scoring a Godzilla film. The title track, "Godzilla 1989", is a good action piece with an underlying "Jaws" type theme. This is a pretty nice track leaning toward the Akira Ifukube school of Godzilla music. Track #2 is more like something we'd expect from Masaru Satoh with it's mellowness. Track #10, the "Super X2" theme, will be immediately familiar as soon as it starts playing. Track # 12 uses some of Akira Ifukube's familiar Godzilla music. Track # 17 is another Ifukube reworking that will be easily recognizable as one of his military marches in other films. Track # 18 is a short cue of the "Super X2" theme and Track #19 is still another reworking of Akira Ifukube's previous Godzilla film music. All of the reworked music here by Mr. Sugiyama is very close to the originals by Mr. Ifukube. Overall this CD is not a bad listen. A few nice originals and some faithful reworkings of past Godzilla music. A little additional info courtesy of Chris Nuzzi, May 28,2003 BTW, did you know that when G vs. Biollante was being planned, Tomoyuki Tanaka wanted Hiroshi Miyagawa to be the film's composer? He could not get him for some reason, so Koichi Sugiyama was picked instead. I had always thought that the Biollante soundtrack had Yamato-like overtones, and when I read this I finally understood why. |
