REVIEW |
August 14, 2024 (written February 14, 2024) In 2013, Bukimisha released their vocal interpretation of the full musical score from the film ATRAGON, composed by Akira Ifukube, in honor of the movie's 50th Anniversary. As that CD is now out of print, the group decided to release a new CD-R to commemorate 60 years since the film's release. But instead of simply performing the musical score, Bukimisha has delivered something a little different. The program is divided into two tracks - a recreation of ATRAGON's original movie trailer, and a condensed audio drama (slightly longer than an hour) of the film itself, including spoken dialogue and vocalized portions of Ifukube's score. As an added touch, the recording reflects the stereo mix of the original "Undersea Warship Drama Edition" vinyl LP, with music on the left channel and the dialogue and sound effects on the right. While this release will undoubtedly be enjoyable to Japanese listeners, fans who don't speak the language will find it difficult to follow, especially if they are unfamiliar with the plot of the movie. And considering that the name "Bukimisha" can be heard several times, it's likely that some clever alterations have been made to the story. In any case, it's an entertaining listening experience, with spirited (and often humorous) recitation, and the a capella background music is, as always, impeccably performed. Bukimisha CDs are available to non-Japanese buyers through BOOTH (The International Indie Art Marketplace) by using a proxy service or other intermediary: https://bukimisya-maal.booth.pm/ |
