REVIEW |
November 30, 2005 This is a really nice sounding CD with lots of memorable music. Unfortunately there is nothing here that we haven't heard before on other CD's. Still, if you don't already have this music, grab it while it's still in print. The band here does great work with Mr. Ifukube's music. Mainly for those that don't already have this music or like me are Akira Ifukube completists. Update about track 1, July 09, 2006, by Erik Homenick Track one of this disc is"Kishi Mai", the march Ifukube wrote for the Japanese Navy in 1943. Previously on this site, track one was listed as "Classical Windmill Music (Good Fortune Dance)". This was, in essence, a much too literal translation of the CD's kanji. The first amount of kanji does not read "Classical Windmill Music". Actually, it reads something like "Classical Wind Music". This is, no doubt, a reference to the fact that this is a wind band piece. The kanji in the second part does literally say "Good Fortune Dance," but this piece is never called that in English. The piece should be referred to simply as "Kishi Mai." This is significant because KICC-531 includes the only-ever commercially available recording of "Kishi Mai" (released as recently as 2005!). |
