REVIEW |
April 28, 2008
This is an extremely rare CD from a group calling themselves Kream, which features two young girls, Keiko Funami and Tomoko Ayabe. The reason this CD is posted here is because it contains the exact same two Mothra tracks which are found on the pink Mothra CD single from 1996 (PHDL-1072). Originally I thought this pink single was only issued to help promote the first Heisei Mothra film, until I discovered the existence of this Kream CD. It seems the pink single might not be an "official" release for the film at all, but directly tied to promoting their own album of cover songs, which was released the same day as the CD single. As for the music, this CD will not be everyone's cup of tea. All the tracks have a rather heavy techno sound to them which can become monotonous after a while. Track 3 is a techno version of the "Mothra Song", while Track 10 is an even heavier "Club Mix" version of the song, which actually makes the version on Track 3 seem tame by comparison. I found Track 1 "Dancing Queen" (originally by Abba) to be enjoyable enough and the two Bee Gees tracks were also interesting in their own way. It is very difficult finding any information on the web for Kream or this CD, but I believe this was their debut release, and it's obviously a cover album featuring many pop songs from the 70's. The Mothra tracks on this CD probably feature the group's attempt at "covering" the Mothra Song with their techno style (like all the other tracks found here), and as mentioned above it is unclear if this release or the Mothra pink CD single had any "official" connection with the film at the time. It should also be noted that these two techno Mothra tracks are NOT featured on the original Mothra 1996 OST (either the single or double CD), as the soundtrack features two different girls singing the Mothra Song which appeared in the film - Megumi Kobayashi and Sayaka Yamaguchi. |
