April 12, 2002 Toru Takemitsu did the soundtrack music to Akira Kurosawa's "RAN" movie. I really enjoyed that soundtrack (and the movie). He also did the soundtrack to "Dodesukaden". This volume contains the music from Hiroshi Teshigahara's films: Face of Another ('66), Summer Soldiers ('72), The Pitfall ('62), The White Dawn ('64), Woman in the Dunes ('64), Jose Torres ('59), Ruined Map ('68), and Rikyu ('89). This CD was as disappointing as the other one on this site. There are no Akira Kurosawa pieces on this disc but since Toru Takemitsu did do some Kurosawa soundtracks I decided to put this disc here. The eight tracks propel you abruptly from tango (with a German female vocal) to prepared piano and electronics, to piano jazz. Track 3 contains a lot of blowing wind sounds and what sounded like someone crying. The CD is a real mixed bag of styles and was not my cup of tea. |
