REVIEW |
April 12, 2002 This soundtrack is from the 1963 movie "High And Low" which again stars Toshiro Mifune. A child of the chauffeur is mistakenly kidnapped in the place of a businessman's son. The businessman, played by Toshiro Mifune, is involved in a high-stakes takeover of his company from his bosses and chooses to risk losing his shirt to pay the ransom for the child that is not his own. I am pretty sure this movie was also remade as an American movie but can't remember the title. The 1996 Mel Gibson movie "Ransom" was somewhat close but in that movie the rich man's son is the one kidnapped. The music on this disc is listed as mono/stereo and as with the other discs in this set sounds great. Track 14 on the disc is a female vocal, "The Magic Begins", sung in English and is repeated as an instrumental on Track 19. "The Magic Begins" is an American tune that should sound very familiar to most people over 40. Track 16 is a guitar and horn track sounding a lot like 1950's rock'n'roll. Most of the rest of the music on the disc is on the dark side with befits the subject matter of the film and has many tracks with the typical jazz like feel of other Masaru Satoh music. I have also seen this film as I have most of the films in these box sets and it was a very intense but enjoyable movie and the music complements the action very well. It's also good stand alone music that holds up well apart from the movie and has a haunting, yet catchy main theme. However, as with other CD's with so many tracks, some short cues get repeated many times on the disc. |
