REVIEW |
April 12, 2002 This soundtrack from the 1965 movie starring Toshiro Mifune as 'Red Beard' has the longest running time of any of the CD's in this set which I guess befits a movie with an over 3 hour running time. There are many longer tracks and less short cues on this disc than on the previous ones in this set. This was the last Kurosawa film Toshiro Mifune was in due to a falling out with the director during the filming of this movie. In this movie Mifune plays the head doctor in a government run clinic for the poor. A new intern named Dr. Noboru Yasumoto (played by Yuzo Kayama) arrives at the clinic and soon becomes angry and rebels in order to get thrown out of the clinic. He starts to drink heavily and won't wear his uniform. Later on he realizes from his patients, himself, but mostly from "Red Beard" what it really means to become a good doctor. The music on this disc is labeled Mono on the back cover but mono/stereo on the disc itself. The first track starts off sounding very similar to a Hollywood biblical epic. A lot of the other tracks on the disc take on a very dark and somber tone. |
